CREPS  News & Events

Welcome to CREPS, Dr Jason Lavroff

Dr Jason Lavroff completed his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree at Monash University in 2000 with specialisation in the area of fluid mechanics. In 2005, he commenced research on high-speed INCAT wave-piercer catamarans to investigate hydrodynamic structural loads and slam induced whipping vibration responses. In 2009, Dr Lavroff completed his PhD and was appointed lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering, University of Tasmania. Prior to his appointment as lecturer, Dr Lavroff was also involved in various other roles while working as a mechanical engineer at Cadbury Schweppes, Australian Maritime College, INCAT and Gutteridge Haskins and Davies (GHD). Today, Dr Lavroff is currently pursuing his research interests with INCAT on high-speed wave piercer catamarans with on-going
research projects in the areas of dynamics, vibrations and wave induced dynamic structural loads".

Welcome to CREPS, Jessica Andrewartha

We would like to welcome Jessica Andrewartha to CREPS. Jessica will strengthen the renewable energy program with her background in civil engineering and fluid dynamics.

Jessica received her BE (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Tasmania in 2005. She worked with Hydro Tasmania (both Generation and Consulting) during her undergraduate degree and on a casual basis while she completed her doctorate. Jessica submitted her PhD thesis on the flow physics of flows over freshwater biofilms in relation to hydroelectric generation in August 2009. She was then appointed as the first Australian Power Institute Research Fellow in Renewable Energy at the University of Tasmania. Her research interests include renewable energy generation, fluid dynamics, boundary layer flow, and experimental techniques in fluid dynamics. She is also actively involved in Engineers Australia and was the Chair of Young Engineers Tasmania in 2008. She is currently the Tasmanian Representative on the Young Engineers Australia committee, and also sits as a committee member of the Tasmania Division of Engineers Australia. In 2011, she will hold the position of Chair of Young Engineers Australia.

Welcome to CREPS, Dr Ameen Gargoom

We would like to welcome Dr Ameen Gargoom to CREPS.  Ameen will strengthen our research team in his position as Research Fellow.  He will be working on ARC Linkage Project "Hybrid Remote Area Power Systems with Hydrogen Energy Storage for Isolated and Regional Communities".

Dr Ameen Gargoom received BSc and MSc (with honours) degrees from the University of Garyounis, Libya in 1994 and 2001 respectively, both in electrical engineering, and received the PhD degree in electrical engineering from the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 2007. He worked with Al-Emara Co. for Engineering Consultants, Libya, as a consultant engineer for six years before joining the University of Garyounis in 2001 as an associate lecturer for one year. In 2008, he joined Tasmania University where he is currently working as a Research Fellow.  His interests include power electronics control, power quality monitoring, application of signals processing techniques to power systems, and renewable energy systems. Dr Gargoom is a member of IEEE and a regular reviewer of IEEE and IET publications.

Welcome to CREPS, Dr Paras Mandal

CREPS extends a warm welcome to Dr Paras Mandal.  Paras be working on ARC Linkage Project " On-line Monitoring and Modelling of Electric Loads for Improving Operational Conditions of Power Systems".

Dr Paras Mandal received his B.E. degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Kuvempu University (now under Visveswariah Technological University), India in 1998; M.E. degree in the field of Energy, Economics and Planning from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand in 2002; and Ph.D. degree from the University of the Ryukyus, Japan in 2005.   Dr Mandal was  a JSPS postdoctoral fellow at the University of the Ryukyus before he joined the School of Engineering, Yonsei University, Seoul, South Koreaa as a Research Professor in 2007. He is presently working a Research Fellow in the School of Engineering at the University of Tasmania. His research interests include application of artificial intelligence techniques to electricity load and price forecasting; electricity markets; power system modeling;  and renewable energy. Dr Mandal is a member of IEEE Power and Energy Society and a regular reviewer of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. He is a recipient of the “2006 Young Engineer” award presented by Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ).

Welcome to CREPS, Professor Vic Gosbell, Professor Gerard Ledwich and Dr Marian Piekutowski

The VC has appointed Prof Vic Gosbell, Prof Gerard Ledwich and Dr Marian Piekutowski as an Honorary Research Professors in the Centre for Renewable Energy and Power Systems for the period from 8 September 2008 to 7 September 2010.
